Chapter 25

Dam Concordia

“Come on, Onyx, let’s go!” said Lilith, patting her leg. For a moment, it amused her how much she actually treated Onyx like a real pet dog. Onyx limped onto the shuttle, followed by Vinsten.

“Have a seat right there!” said Lilith as she pointed Vinsten to a comfy leather sofa chair and shut the door behind her.

“Oh…” said Vinsten. “Now that hits the spot!”

Lilith smiled. Underneath his hard military facade, she could tell Vinsten was a very funny, charismatic character. If he could just be shown the error of his harsh judgment and misunderstandings, maybe he would prove to be a valuable ally.

“Roger, head to the dam on the river Concordia,” said Lilith, as he piloted the cruiser out of the gates.

“So Dillard, what’s it gonna take to get your cooperation?” asked Lilith, as she sat down in a seat adjacent to Vinsten.

“First off, don’t call me Dillard! Hate that name! Sounds like billiards! Do I look like a game of pool to you? And don’t call me Dill either! I ain’t a pickle! Vinsten’s the name, don’t wear it out!”

“Here, I swiped something from the barracks that should get him to shut that trap and be more compliant,” said Roger.

He handed Lilith two small plastic rectangles with colorful pictures enclosed inside.

“What are these!? Some kind of cards?” asked Lilith.

“No!” said Vinsten, alarmed.

“Not just any cards, they’re his prized treasures!”

“Ok, what’s so great about them?” asked Lilith, turning them over in her hands as she fidgeted with the edges, trying to pry one open with her nails.

“Don’t! That’s a rare PSA Professional Sports Authenticator graded EX 5 1909-1911 T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, and an NM 7 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle!”

“I’m sorry, I don’t think I understood anything you just said! In English please?” laughed Lilith, as she examined the cards.

“Careful with them! They’re very valuable! They were super rare in their time, and are probably the only ones left in existence! They could be worth millions!”

“Valuable? To whom? Who’s gonna pay for these!? Nobody has that kind of money! Even if they did, they aren’t gonna spend it on little old squares of rotting paper! I’m amazed! You really think these trinkets are worth anything? Food, water, shelter, friendship, love, those are the things that matter in this world, pal.”

“My brimstone era ancestor Horace H. Wilcock had them on his person when the Enclave was first founded. His journal tells how he went to great lengths to keep them safe. They were a gift from my father who passed away last week. I also inherited his trinkets, like a gold-plated pocket watch, a ceramic frog, a collection of glass figurines, and a crystal ball. There’s more to it than money though. They have a story, a sentimental value. I had them in a case with my belongings, unsecured because I had just received them from our family lawyer. I knew I should have gone for a lock box at the bank!”

“Look, you seem like an ok guy, despite all that tension back there, so I’m gonna level with you.
